CHAPTER V: BIOSAFETY

This chapter fulfills requirements specified in the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules (NIH Guidelines) and the Washington State Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (WAC 296-823). It also contains policies and procedures as established by the Hutchinson Center Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

This program applies to research performed in the Hutchinson Center’s labs and clinical areas, including projects funded by granting agencies other than NIH and researchers from other institutions working at the Center.

The Biosafety Program is intended to serve as a broad guideline for biologic safety in the lab. Each principal investigator (PI) is responsible for training lab workers regarding specific procedures and potential hazards in their areas of responsibility.
