Due to the nature of the Hutchinson Center’s business, it is sometimes necessary to transport or ship hazardous materials off-site. Regulations dictate requirements for hazardous material transportation, and all are accompanied by penalties that punish noncompliance. Therefore, in order to provide safety and avoid penalties, it is important that applicable requirements are followed when transporting a hazardous material off-site. Although transport of hazardous materials between buildings or laboratories on campus is not subject to transportation regulations, the safety precautions described in Section 3.7 must be followed.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates the transport of hazardous materials. Regulated materials include infectious substances and biological materials; radioactive materials; chemicals that are flammable, corrosive, reactive, toxic, oxidizing, or otherwise hazardous; compressed gases; and other hazardous materials such as dry ice.
The following information is designed to help you quickly determine what is necessary to ship your material in a timely and safe fashion. If you have a pressing situation or simply need assistance, please call EH&S.
