OSR - Application Preparation

The application is often the first point of contact between a researcher and a sponsor and because of this, it is very important to make a good impression by constructing an application that is well written and clearly identifies to the sponsor the merits, benefits, and scientific importance of the proposed activity.

Some extramural funding sources specify that a particular format be used for the writing of the proposal and that special forms be attached. Other sources leave the presentation entirely to the discretion of the applicant. Foundations are usually less formal than are governmental agencies and typically do not require a highly standardized presentation.

While sponsors' individual requirements differ, there are several steps that must be completed in order to submit a proposal from the Hutchinson Center. This section provides guidance on the preparation of applications for funding of sponsored research projects at the Center, including an explanation of the procedures that must be followed prior to submitting a research proposal to a potential funding agency or foundation.

Under no circumstances should these guidelines supercede desired format requests in guidelines issued by a particular agency.
